Cancer patients received huge doses of radiation so the U.S. Defense Department could study the potential effect of nuclear warfare.

"In all, 90 women and men, two-thirds black, were subjected to this lethal risk, and virtually all were made more ill in one way or another," Stephens says.

She compares the studies to Nazi medical experiments.

Speaking of right-wing extremists, Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Peter Bronson has now called for exterminating his political enemies by means of poison gas.

The Treatment: The Story of Those Who Died in the Cincinnati Radiation Tests (Duke University Press, 2002). Not everything in these papers will be self-explanatory outside the context of the book, but some documents can certainly be read or understood on their own—the hearing transcripts, for instance, the newspaper clippings, most of the legal briefs, the publications of the researchers, and their reports over the years to the Defense Department.

A list of books related to this subject appears in the appendices of The Treatment. Major entries include Human Guinea Pigs by M.H. Pappworth, MD; Bad Blood (on the Tuskegee syphilis experiments) by James Jones; The Nazi Doctors and the Nuremberg Code, edited by George Annas and Michael Grodin; the issue on Nuremberg of The Journal of the American Medical Association, November 27, 1996 (volume 276, number 20); and The Plutonium Files (on the full range of US deliberate exposures during the Cold War) by Eileen Welsome.

No complete set of the papers released by the UC College of Medicine in 1994 is available in this collection, thought many papers from those materials are attached to the folder here of one kind or another. A full set of these somewhat jumbled but important releases, taken from the back files of the College, may continue to be available in the medical archives on East Campus.

Certain files concerning the individual researchers, as well as papers concerning myself and the Junior Faculty Association, are separately available within the Archives and Rare Books Library.

It might be pointed out that where I generally refer to the events from 1960-1972 as “the UC radiation experiments” (or “tests”), the researchers and their colleagues often use the term “study”—“the whole-body study,” i.e.

Readers of these papers will find a certain number of large-print pages. I have had low vision most of my life and often make use of the enlargements; in most cases the originals I enlarged were still in my files and have been provided in place of enlargements.

Most papers here will have a date attached, but not all. Where possible, I’ve attempted to order the pages within folders by their dates or approximate dates. I also attempted to discard duplicate pages, but some duplicates will no doubt appear.

When The Treatment appeared in 2002, a whole set of new papers, reviews, correspondences, and so on, were of course generated. I have provided here only a small sample of these materials, but I may in time make an additional gift of documents surrounding this publication.

"Back in 1947 they knew. The data had been gathered at Argonne National Laboratory.[1] They knew that the newborn puppies, whose mothers had been fed small amounts of radioactive strontium-90, were dying of underdevelopment and serious birth defects. The government knew, and decided to keep it secret. The government set up the study. The government knew the results. And the government kept those results from the American people. Why?"

We are at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in the office of the director of the Department of Radiological Physics, Dr. Ernest Sternglass. . . . He came to the United States from Nazi Germany when he was fourteen, in 1938. He leans forward, gesturing with his hands. "I know how a government can be totally destructive of its own people, how people in the highest level of government can use lies to achieve their political purposes."

Dr. Sternglass has been working for almost twenty years to publicize the dangers of low-level radiation. His article on the increased incidence of leukemia from fallout was published in Science in the spring of 1963. The Atomic Energy Commission "pooh-poohed the whole thing." They said his statistics "weren't good enough." His findings threatened the nuclear establishment. The government and the nuclear industry tried to discredit his evidence by making Dr. Sternglass out to be a "kook." It took courage to continue to speak out. . . .

The year 1947 was a turning point for Sternglass. . . . [he] had the opportunity to meet Einstein in person.

Victor Mordecai is the pen name for Avi Lipkin, an American born Jew who immigrated to Israel in 1968. After completing a BA at Hebrew University in Sovietology, Russian and Eastern European studies, Avi then went on to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces for 15 years, and then another 12 years as an army spokesman in the Judea and Samaria Command. Craig says the biggest deception is that Islam is a peaceful religion. He came to that conclusion after studying the Quran and Muhammad's own words. "His own words condemn him," Craig says. "September 11 happened because Muhammad is a terrorist." ... Craig says today's terrorists are less violent than Muhammad and that the record shows "Muhammad's life mirrored Hitler's." He says Muhammad practiced genocide, was a polygamist, a rapist, a pedophile, a liar - and said it was good to lie. When the Jews disputed Muhammed's version of the Scriptures and condemned them, Muhammed declared war on them, decapitated them, and sold the women into slavery. His vision of heaven was one big orgy, with martyrs being rewarded with from two to seventy-two virgins depending on how they got there. Obviously Islam is much better than Judaism and Christianity. Neither of those religions have any history of its adherents or leaders doing anything violent like genocide, practicing polygamy, raping, lying, etc. Christianity and Judaism are, then, far better than Islam, right? Right?
